Advice & guides

From the tools into supervision.

Your trade knowledge is the foundation. Show how you help a team turn a plan into good work.

Start with the leadership you already demonstrate

Have you helped brief a team, supported an apprentice, coordinated a work front or identified a problem before it held up the job? These examples can show how you work with others. Explain what you actually did and the responsibility you held.

Describe the whole task

Supervision involves understanding more than your own activity. Talk about how you considered materials, access, drawings, other trades and the sequence of work. A useful example explains the situation, your decision and the outcome without claiming credit for the whole team.

Be clear about your next step

If you are looking for your first formal supervisory position, say so. Separate the experience you already have from the responsibilities you want to develop. Discuss the expectations of a particular role with the recruiter rather than assuming all supervisor positions are the same.

Keep building your evidence

Record relevant training and examples of planning, communication and problem-solving. Use these to prepare for conversations about your experience. A clear, honest account gives the recruiter a better starting point than a list of broad leadership claims.
